PTA Tech Talk at Jean Nuzzi IS 109 Empowering Parents and Students
Updated: Oct 24
A strong home-school connection significantly impacts students' assignment management, expectations, and confidence. On October 22, Jean Nuzzi Intermediate School 109 hosted a PTA “Tech Talk” in the school library to help families understand digital tools supporting student learning.
From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., parents and guardians attended a session on NYC Department of Education resources, student progress tools, academic support platforms, and online safety. Families could ask questions, see resources in action, and learn to stay connected to their child’s school experience.
The day included a visit from nearby District 29 elementary schools, P.S. 033 Edward M. Funk and P.S. 135Q, The Bellaire School and The Bellaire Magnet School of the Arts. Visiting students toured the building, met the school community, attended a guidance presentation, and visited classrooms, experiencing a middle school field trip.
Families learned how to track student progress
The PTA Tech Talk aimed to help families use tools to track student progress, grades, schedules, attendance, and academic updates. Parents learned about NYC DOE resources and related learning platforms that simplify school information.
Families discovered digital platforms for checking:
Grades: Identify student performance across classes.
Class schedules: Discuss daily classes and organization.
Attendance: Monitor attendance and identify patterns.
Assignments and academic progress: Track student work and needed practice.
Learning resources: Use tools like i-Ready, Canva, and Adobe Express for skill practice and creative expression.
Parents appreciated how these tools connect to daily school life, forming a support system for families, teachers, and students.
NYC DOE tools help families stay connected
The Tech Talk clarified how NYC DOE resources keep families updated on student information. These tools facilitate quick check-ins on attendance, grades, or assignments, promoting helpful conversations at home.
Access to clear information empowers families to support students with reminders, encouragement, and insightful questions.
Academic tools give students more ways to learn
The PTA Tech Talk highlighted tools like i-Ready, Canva, and Adobe Express, which support academic growth. i-Ready aids skill practice, while Canva and Adobe Express foster creativity in presentations and projects.
Online safety was a key part of the conversation
The Tech Talk addressed online safety, emphasizing the need for ongoing conversations about apps, online interactions, privacy settings, and screen time. Families were encouraged to maintain open dialogues with children about safe digital behavior.
Visiting elementary students got a look at middle school life
October 22 also included a visit from District 29 elementary schools, allowing students to tour Jean Nuzzi IS 109, attend a guidance presentation, and visit classrooms, easing the transition to middle school.
The visit helped students visualize their future school environment, making the transition less daunting.
A day built around connection
The day combined family learning and student readiness. Parents learned about digital tools and resources, while elementary students explored middle school life. Both aspects supported the goal of student success, fostering trust by providing information and welcoming future students.
